Winter Camping in Hotagen

March 21, 2024

I headed out on a solo winter camping trip in Hotagen. I had amazing weather, sunny blue skies. A little breeze on the days but in the nights the wind picked up a lot.

Hotagen Nature Reserve

Hotagen Nature Reserve is located in Krokom and Strömsunds municipality in Jämtland, Sweden. The nature reserve is large, with a size of 113 000 square kilometer, almost the size of Öland. Hotagen nature reserve was created in year 1993.

Great feeling of wilderness

When you traveling to Hotagen nature reserve you will find a great feeling of wilderness. In Hotagen nature reserve you have big chances to see tracks and maybe if you are very lucky meet a Brown Bear in the beautiful old growth forest, if you win the jackpot you also may see Lynx, Wolverine, Arctic fox or a Eagle that sweeps over the wild landscape.

Rich Culture landscape

The entire area is characterized by Sami life and work, in the spring winter the reindeers arrive to the fells of Hotagen for summer pasture. Please take big care if you meet a reindeer, stay still and enjoy these beautiful animals.

My winter camping journey in Hotagen nature reserve

First campsite at Penningkeisen

I started my journey from Vinklumpen, beautiful location just outside Valsjöbyn. I skied towards Penningkeisen where I pitch my tent. During the skiing I had the most amazing views towards the fells in Norway. Before I get to bed I enjoy a really beautiful sunset. After a day with breeze the wind pick up during the night.

Beautiful morning in the fells

After a windy night I woke up to a lovely spring winter morning with no wind. I had some breakfast before I pack my pulk and continue my journey to Lobbersjön.

Legend of Penningkeisen

The legends tells that if you walk alone in silence, when the mist linger between the old fir trees, over the damp backlighted bogs with cotton grass, continue up to the fell Penningkeisen, don’t be afraid what you might hear and see, when you reach the top of the fells in the bright summer night you will find the hidden treasure.

Journey to Lobbersjön

On my way I found some amazing snow formations created by the wind.

Winter camping at Lobbersjön in Hotagen nature reserve

I found a nice campsite close to Lobbersjön and the fells Väjrakliehpie, Jillie Duvvietjaerhvie, Biernieklliehpie. I know that the wind will pick up in the night so I found a beautiful campsite in the valley among the birch trees.

Raven fly over the fells

Everything was very silent and just sudden I hear, swoosh, swoosh, swoosh, I look up and see a Raven that flies high up over the fell Väjrakliehpie. Such a nice experience.

Journey back towards Vinklumpen

After a very windy night with drifting snow the wind had calm down a little and the sunshine beamed from a clear blue sky. I eat my breakfast and pack down my tent in my pulk and head back towards Vinklumpen.

Lunchtime at Tvärån

I had my lunch break at Tvärån, dig down a shelter in the snow and I really enjoy my lunch.
