July 15, 2021

I want to share some tips I learned over the years to get sharper photos and reduce vibrations and unwanted motion blur to your photographs.

Tips to get sharper photos
Morning Glory | Arefjället, South of Lapland

Use tripod to get sharper photos

When I photographing I mostly always use a study tripod, that helps me get the composition and settings right and massively help to get sharper photos.

Backlight Snowstorm | Vålådalen Nature Reserve, Jämtland

In windy conditions I recommend you to take off your lens hood to minimize vibrations on your camera caused by the wind blowing on you camera.

Turn off Image stabilizer when you are on a tripod

Morning Light | Helvetesbrännan, Medelpad

When you use tripod you should turn off image stabilizer else that will search for vibration that doesn’t exist.
If it’s very windy you can turn on image stabilization to minimize vibration and maybe try to increase the ISO to get a shorter shutter speed, even if you using a tripod.

Frozen in Time 2 | Arådalen, Jämtland

In windy conditions I recommend you to take off your camera strap to minimize vibrations on your camera caused by the wind blowing around the camera strap and it might hit the camera or tripod and cause vibration.

Shot RAW

Magical Show | Hara, Jämtland

I also recommend you to shot in RAW, half of the work is to capture the photo and make it come alive when you edit the photo. Then you can also adjust the sharpness in Lightroom and maybe add web sharpening in photoshop if you output the photo for web.

2 sec timer or remote shooter

2 sec timer or remote shooter
Evening Glory | Predikstolen, Härjedalen

Never touch the camera when you take a exposure. I recommend you to use a 2 second timer.
When you push the shutter that will create vibration on the camera and if you use 2 second timer that will give your camera time to stabilize. If the ground is soft like a bog, you even need 10 seconds timer.

10 seconds timer for telephoto lenses

If you using a long tele lens the camera need more time to stabilize, then it also a good Idea to use a 10 seconds timer.
